LiveUp exists for people to 'Discover the Upside of Ageing'

As people age, navigating the maze of support services can be overwhelming. The sheer volume of information available, spread across countless organisations and platforms, often leads to confusion, frustration, and missed opportunities for vital assistance.

Many older people in Australia struggle to determine which resources are reliable, while accessibility barriers further limit their ability to engage with digital services. Websites that aren’t designed with older users in mind can exclude those with visual, auditory, or cognitive impairments, making it even harder to find the support they need.

Recognising this challenge, iLA launched LiveUp – a free digital platform designed to simplify access to ageing support information. Created quickly to meet a growing need, LiveUp had been operating for 18 months when iLA saw an opportunity to refine and expand its reach. To ensure the platform truly met the needs of older Australians, iLA engaged Anthologie to enhance its usability, accessibility, and overall effectiveness. Their mission: to transform LiveUp into a user-centred online knowledge hub that empowers individuals to take control of their ageing journey.

The Challenge

While LiveUp was successfully helping its national audience, its rapid development meant there were areas that needed improvement to maximise its impact. iLA wanted to take a more user-centred approach to expand LiveUp’s reach and ensure it remained a valuable, sustainable resource for the ageing population.

One of the key challenges was ensuring the platform was truly accessible and user-friendly for an audience with diverse needs. Many digital platforms are not designed with older users in mind, often featuring complex navigation, small text, or busy interfaces that create barriers for those with visual, auditory, or cognitive impairments.

Another challenge was simplifying the overwhelming volume of information available about ageing support services. With resources spread across different organisations and websites, many users found it difficult to discern which information was relevant to their circumstance, leading to frustration and missed opportunities for essential assistance.
Additionally, iLA sought to enhance their control over the platform’s content. The existing system limited their ability to make updates efficiently, restricting their ability to evolve the platform proactively.

Recognising these challenges, iLA partnered with Anthologie to refine the platform and create a more intuitive, empowering digital experience for older people in Australia.

The Approach

Anthologie conducted a comprehensive UX audit, in-depth stakeholder interviews, and a participatory workshop with individuals aged 65 and over. These steps ensured a deep understanding of how users interacted with LiveUp, what pain points they faced, and what improvements would make the platform more effective.

With these insights, we developed a strategic product roadmap, prioritising user experience improvements based on real user needs.

Consulting with users aged over 65 years

A focus group of 7 older people joined us in our office to share their thoughts on how they prefer to group and browse through healthy ageing content.
Workshop materials including sticky notes and ARnott's classic biscuits.
Participants annotated a selection of assistive products with descriptive words.
User feedback showed areas on the 'Age Your Way' page that needed more citations to be effective.
Users pointed out components that they were unsure about or would ignore and we were able to ask them why.
User feedback on the homepage was largely positive, with opportunities suggested by users.

The Solution

The enhanced LiveUp platform now delivers a more seamless, accessible, and customised experience. The key improvements include:

  • User-Friendly Interface: A cleaner, simplified layout that improves navigation and accessibility for older users.
  • Greater Flexibility for iLA: By moving to Payload CMS, iLA’s team can now manage and update content independently, reducing reliance on external developers.
  • Mobile-First Optimisation: Analytics revealed that a large majority of users accessed the platform via mobile or tablet devices. This approach ensures that LiveUp is optimised for the ways older people actually used the platform, ensuring accessibility across all devices.
  • User-Tested Enhancements: Features and content were refined based on real user interactions and feedback.
  • Accessibility-First Design: Accessibility principles were upheld to ensure usability for both end-users and administrative staff managing the platform.
MOck up showing variety of mobile screens for the LiveUp website including headlines like 'What is assistive technology,' 'Healthy ageing has three foundations,' and Take control of your healthy ageing journey.' The screens also include descriptions of products and social activities that users can engage with to positively benefit their health. The website features a comprehensive filter and tagging system to find social activities in your area from lawn bowls to cultural clubs, to writers club. Various user interface design elements including buttons, goal tags, and cards.

The Impact

The refinements made to LiveUp have already provided iLA with a clear, user-validated direction for future enhancements. The updated platform now offers a more intuitive, empowering digital experience, helping older Australians find the support they need with ease.

By applying a user-centred approach, LiveUp has evolved into a more effective and accessible resource, setting a new benchmark for digital platforms in the ageing and disability support sector.

Beyond LiveUp, the success of this project has further strengthened the partnership between Anthologie and iLA, leading to continued collaboration on projects like the National Equipment Database (NED), geat2GO and Keep Able. This expanded engagement highlights a shared commitment to improving the lives of older people in Australia through thoughtful, user-focused digital solutions.

The LiveUp quiz provides users a personalised list of social activities and products based on their answers to the quiz. LiveUp shows users what social activities there are in their area from an Australia-wide database.

By streamlining content, improving accessibility, and making it easier for iLA to maintain the platform, LiveUp is now positioned as a sustainable, scalable knowledge hub that truly serves its audience.

Commencing work with Anthologie was a turning point in the journey of LiveUp. It’s not only that they are they a safe set of hands, insisting on evidence and co-design to back every decision. Nor is it the fact that the UX work has consistently been of the highest calibre. More than that, it’s the fact they are genuinely driven by a passion and belief in what we’re trying to achieve: a better life for older people in Australia.
